IndyCar Series

Codemaster’s multi-platform IndyCar Series game brings the high-speed thrills of open-wheel IRL racing to gamers on PC, PlayStation 2, and Xbox, the console used for this review. Players can engage in 200-mph quick races, or suit up for a full race season on 15 realistically modeled courses, ensuring this game will be a hit with devoted IRL fans.
With the exception of the most hardcore pole sitters, players are brought up to speed by attending the Masterclass taught by former Indy 500 winner Eddie Cheever, Jr. This nomex-wearing professor instructs on everything from cornering to pit techniques, dramatically broadening the game’s appeal and depth. The Masterclass syllabus begins with an explanation of a race, from start to finish, and covers basic and advanced car control, maximizing performance, qualification, racing techniques, the pits, caution period, and ends with an overview of the Indy Car series.
The strict adherence to the IRL season forfeits an opportunity to introduce fantasy tracks, such as infield road courses, that could broaden the game’s appeal. We hope the next title in the series adds depth with such features as car design, complete with wind tunnel and track testing; team management with a sponsorship ladder; and entry-level league, such as Menards Infiniti Pro Series.
Amazing graphics, realistic handling physics, pro drivers and cars, full race circuit, and attention to such details as rubber granules accumulating near the wall make IndyCar Series a real treat for IRL fans. However, general car enthusiasts looking for an addictive, weekend-gobbling game may find more appeal on the high banks of NASCAR tracks or urban streets of Project Gotham Racing and Need For Speed franchises.
