The plot line for Lula 3D—tracking down some missing porn actors across the USA—would be passable (not great, but passable), were it not for the general gameplay experience lacking in quality. There isn’t a single major gameplay-hindering feature that can be pointed to as the one main issue, just a number of smaller problems that come together to form a bad game. Difficult third-person semi-fixed camera Resident Evil-style controls. Badly integrated Time Crisis-like shooting and item throwing scenes. Long pauses in some speech. Having to wait for Lula to take items out of her ample cleavage (which serves as a pocket; unfortunately, in an adventure game, you don’t want to have to wait about 7 seconds to take an item out). Strange duplicated/nonsensical action options (e.g. “Look at toilet” when there is no toilet in view). Being unable to perform some actions whilst holding items, with no indication of this (at one point I was attempting to open a door, and failing; putting the item away and trying again opened it first time). Bits of untranslated text taking you by surprise (“Game over. Try again? Ja/Nein”). All these and more add up to make an unsatisfying, and at times frustrating gaming experience.

Going beyond the gameplay issues, if you’ve got a high-powered rig, it’s not going to be taxed by Lula 3D; it’s true that graphics aren’t everything, but they certainly help. Firstly, graphic details are configurable by a 3-point slider. Individual graphics options cannot be tweaked, and even at the highest settings you’re limited to 1024×768 at 60Hz (this coupled with a white loading screen and a CRT is not great for people like me who can see flicker easily). Secondly, even at the highest settings, model quality in general isn’t very good. Lula herself is modelled well enough, so it’s evident that the development team contained at least one modeller with enough skills to make good quality figures, it’s just that the majority of the other characters and objects lack quality, and wouldn’t look out of place in a 1990s FPS. Finally, the animation simply isn’t realistic. Items wobble around in people’s hands. Sex scenes consist of bodies roughly moving close to one another, often with a hand going through the other person’s body To look at it, you wouldn’t imagine that Lula 3D takes up over 2 gigabytes of HDD space—I’m having trouble comprehending how this feat was even possible.

All in all, given the number of issues with Lula 3D (including eye-killing 60Hz), if you were considering getting it, I’d strongly recommend against it (except, maybe, in a bargain bin so that you can see why it’s so bad). Even if you just want it for the sex content, don’t bother, it really isn’t worth it.
