Tales of Monkey Island: Launch of the Screaming Narwhal

I went into Tales of Monkey Island with a little bit of apprehension, as I’m sure quite a few fans of the well loved LucasArts franchise did, even though I was well aware of Telltale’s stellar track record up to this point. Thankfully, they didn’t disappoint in the slightest, delivering another tale of “Guybrush Threepwood, Mighty Pirate” that makes it feel like there hasn’t been a nearly decade long gap in his oddball adventures.
Telltale has been knocking these adventure game throwbacks out of the park in the last few years, with the exceptional Sam and Max revival, and the more recent Wallace and Gromit adventures that just hit XBLA a couple months back (and PCs prior to that). There’s nobody on the market today that’s better qualified to bring back the Monkey Island series, and that really shows in this initial PC episode, Launch of the Screaming Narwhal. All the humor, gags, and well thought out puzzle solving of the original titles is present in this new release, and while the game has obviously seen a graphical overhaul from its 2D roots, it’s one of Telltale’s best efforts so far, with some really solid animation work being put into the main cast.
