After the fanfare of the opening cinematic, promises of an improved and reinvigorated gaming experience ringing in our ears post-Gamescom, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games positioned itself pretty well out of the starting gate. After all, winter sports like snowboarding, skiing and, erm, skeleton, exude cool and make for typically fun sim-sports to play.

The good news is, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games is a better game than the original.

…but is that really saying much? Look, for the sake of transparency, I didn’t particularly care for the original Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. Today, after several days’ worth of Winter Games and Dream Events, single and multiplayer, motion controls and Wii Fit board, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games only marginally improves on its predecessor, still falling into the same unpolished – and more critically, unenjoyable pratfalls of the first.

Structurally, the game mirrors the two-week length of the actual Winter Olympics, taking you through training runs and actual events as you earn your medals and points and work your way to the top of the podium. For every couple of ‘days’ you play in-game, a “Rival appears!” such as King Boo, who floats into frame. “You need a lesson in speed!” he taunts. Yeah, no kidding. This game is routinely slow as molasses if you’re not hitting every speed pad in succession.
