One could draw the line between the respective audiences for NBA 2K10 and NBA Live 10 the same way we draw the line between basketball fans in general: some of you came to see a well executed pick and roll, the rest of you are here for the dunks. That’s not to say NBA Live 10 is a dumbed-down experience and NBA 2K10 is for the very serious (harrumph) gamers out there. Both games make huge strides to faithfully recreate the sport. But NBA 2K10 delves deeper into the brass tacks of what makes basketball happen; the individual effort it takes to get the rock to the hole.

In a sense, you could say NBA Live 10 takes the wider view while NBA 2K10 concentrates on the details. That is true in a lot of ways. Some of those bigger, wider issues – like individual A.I. based on real world tendencies drawn from actual game data as it happens – are better covered by NBA Live 10’s feature package. But when it comes down to simply playing the game on the court, NBA 2K10 is definitely the one in control here.

The amount of control you have over your player, whether with the ball, off it or playing on defense is somewhat unprecedented for a sports game. In some ways, it almost feels like a fighting game, with combos and counter moves. You can define what your ball-handler does down to ever last detail – which side the crossover is too, whether it’s a one or two-footed hop step and so on – giving you complete control of what is happening on the court. Learning the dozens of different combos on the right stick is daunting, but getting good at it will reap rewards.
