Panzer General is turn-based, set on operational level hex maps. A player can play any lone scenario from either Axis or Allied side and choose a computer or human opponent. In campaign mode, the player plays a German general against the Allied computer.
The basic design of the game shares some commonality with the popular Squad Leader board game series, with a wide variety of units available and displayed as profiles.

Panzer General is an operational-level game (mid-sized between strategic and tactical) and units approximate battalions (the largest Tiger tank organization), although unit size and map scale are elastic between scenarios. While the names and information for the units are reasonably accurate, the scenarios are only approximations of historical situations.
Its novel feature was to link individual scenarios into a campaign that spans World War II from 1939 to 1945. Units are able to gain experience and become stronger and where success in one battle would award the player prestige to upgrade units, acquire additional units, and select a better scenario for the next battle.

In 1996, Panzer General won the Origins Award for Best Military or Strategy Computer Game of 1995. It and its sequels spawned a loyal following of players who have revived online head-to-head play and have added many new units, features, and over 2,500 scenarios to play. New ideas still in development over a decade after its initial release.

Heart of Darkness

Heart of Darkness isn’t a bad game. It’s a bit short and a bit frustrating, but it’s always moderately fun and it’s occasionally very fun.

There was a period in time when the side-scrolling action-adventure was a dominant computer game genre. Computer side-scrollers were differentiated from their console counterparts by relying more upon puzzle solving than button pushing, with two games - Out of this World and Flashback - being prime examples of the genre (a complete list would also have to include the Prince of Persia games, the Dark Castle games, and even early efforts like Karateka, Conan, and Bruce Lee). The genre returns to its roots with Amazing Studios’ Heart of Darkness, a simple and frustrating little chunk of a side scroller.

The only recent game to which Heart of Darkness can be compared is Abe’s Oddysee, but even that comparison comes up a little short. Abe’s was pure puzzle solving; Heart of Darkness is a mixture of action-oriented puzzles and puzzle-oriented action. As such, it can really only be compared to Flashback and Out of this World, a not-so-surprising fact considering that Amazing Studios is made up of numerous people who worked on both of those games. Like its predecessors, Heart of Darkness is made up of a series of static screens. In each screen there is a small puzzle, or piece of a larger puzzle that will encompass several screens. The puzzle can be as simple as jumping over a crawling beast or as complex as figuring out how to activate some mechanism that will open a door several screens away while keeping an ever-increasing number of enemies at bay.

Pin-striped zoot suits, classic Model T Fords and gin joints; it was a legendary time that has yet to truly be recaptured. Mob Enforcer follows the trials of one Jimmy DeMora, a fresh-faced young recruit to the Capone organization. Our young protagonist has an ambitious drive to become the number one muscle for the biggest underworld boss in Chicago. No easy feat, but a towering sense of drive coupled with a ruthless willingness to use firearms in public make for potent allies in the quest to become the best of the worst. DeMora gets his orders from a higher-up in the family called Joe Tessio, a character who’s never seen in person, only heard as a sinister voice over the phone. Along the way, you’ll find yourself silencing rats with loose lips, busting up stores of shop keepers who are paying protection money to the wrong families, taking down illegal distilleries owned by rival gangs, busting out of jail, bribing corrupt police chiefs and ultimately coming to the defense of the besieged Capone himself.
